The firm was established in 1982 by Andrew Nicoll and Ric Russell as a result of the completion of Dundee Repertory Theatre. Andrew Nicoll has since retired, and the practice is now led by Professor Ric Russell, appointed OBE in 2005, who is an associate of the Royal Scottish Academy. The practice also has a further five partners; Andy Baxter, Doug Binnie, Ron McHoul, Scott Turpie and Willie Watt. The Dundee Repertory Theatre received the practice's first Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Award.
